John Kelso, journaliste, est envoyé à Savannah pour couvrir la réception qu'organise le riche collectionneur d'art Jim Williams. Au cours de la soirée ce dernier est inculpé du meurtre de son compagnon. Flairant un scandale mondain, Kelso décide de rester afin de couvrir le procès. Cette adaptation de l'incontournable best-seller de John Berendt est une braie réussite. Clint Eastwood parvient à nous plonger avec brio dans l'atmosphère moite et romanesque de Savannah où se croisent des personnages aussi pittoresques qu'attachants.
