Le 25 Mars 2013 sort le premier album de The Popopopops au titre poétique et imagé : « Swell » (qui veut dire houle et élégant, deux termes qui caractérisent parfaitement la musique des rennais). Depuis leurs débuts, The Popopopops enchaînent les concerts en France (Transmusicales, prix CQFD Le s Inrocks, Zénith, Olympia en support de Skip The Use ) et à l'étranger (Hollande, Allemagne, Russie, Canada...). La réputation qu'ils acquièrent par leur live électrisant ne les détourne pas d'un travail ininterrompu de compositions. Les quatre Rennais signent en Mai 2012 « A Quick Remedy », un EP intense. Ils y affirment ainsi leur identité singulière : celle d'un groupe alliant énergie scénique et audace des compositions. Ces nombreuses expériences ont permis au groupe d'évoluer et de digérer les multiples influences à l'origine de leur vocation, telles que Frank Zappa, Television, TV On The Radio et The Whitest Boy Alive. Les pistes explorées dans l'EP, notamment avec l'hymne « My Mind Is Old », se sont cristallisées pour aboutir à l'écriture de ce premier album. Produit par Tom Peters (Klaxons, Cradle of Filth), Maxime Le Guil (Concrete Knives, Camille, Joey Starr) et par le groupe lui-même, "Swell" est un condensé de ses influences, transfigurées par l'énergie et l'inspira tion du quatuor. Dans la recherche de cette alchimie, le groupe a été accompagné par Mickaël Declerck, leur ingénieur son live et studio, véritable cinquième membre du groupe. Enfin, le groupe pousse la cohérence jusqu'au choix symbolique et intime du portrait en couverture. La photographie prise par Richard Dumas de leur ami Thierry s'impose comme une métaphore de la maturité et de la puissance de ce premier album.
