Pour ce nouvel album, Ezra et Rostam ont mis à l’essai une nouvelle méthode de travail, qui s’est avérée bienvenue et fructueuse. La plupart des titres ont pratiquement eu la même genèse : Rostam envoyait une trame musicale souvent basée sur des lignes de basse, cordes et de batteries afin qu’Ezra puisse écrire des paroles et chanter des mélodies par dessus ; ou à l’inverse, Ezra commençait l’écriture et la composition des titres pour finir à travailler ensemble sur des instrumentaux. Le groupe a ensuite pris la direction de Los Angeles pour travailler sur ces embryons de chansons avec un de leurs amis producteur, Ariel recthshaid, dans un des plus vieux studios de la ville, construit dans les années 30. Modern Vampires Of The City est un album audacieux, le point culminant d’une trilogie commencée en 2008 avec leur album éponyme. Même si ils délaissent ici les influences africaines si chères à leurs débuts, les Vampire Weekend arrivent à se renouveler flirtant même avec les classiques des 60s sur Diane Young. Leur troisième album, Modern Vampires Of The City, va très certainement confirmer leur position.
