Après The Dreaming, Kate Bush resta silencieuse pendant plus de deux ans, installant son propre studio 48 pistes chez elle. La chanteuse et musicienne, perfectionniste, allait ainsi pouvoir entièrement contrôler sa production, avec succès, comme le montre ce remarquable album. La musique y est plus complexe et les arrangements plus riches que jamais : Bush a passé énormément de temps en studio, expérimentant avec les techniques les plus modernes, mais des titres comme "Running Up That Hill" (un de ses plus grands succès), "Hounds Of Love" ou "Cloudbusting" prouvent que ce n'était pas en vain. Artistiquement et commercialement, cet album (augmenté aujourd'hui de six titres bonus) la fit entrer dans la cour des grands de l'époque, aux côtés de Sting, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins et autres.
